International students

The program at NTCS is designed primarily for Canadian residents, but there are a number of places available at the higher grade levels for students who enter Canada on a student visa. The school is particularly interested in students who have relatives in Toronto with children attending North Toronto Christian School and who plan to live with those relatives while attending the school. Students are also considered if they are recommended by parents who currently have children in NTCS, or if they are referred to the school through a church or mission organization.

General information

Tuition fees

The tuition fee for an international student for one full school year (September through June) includes ESL classes or English Language Learner (ELL) support, which may be required as part of their studies according to their English ability. Fees must be paid in full prior to the start of the school year. For the first year an international student is at NTCS, the tuition fees include mandatory health insurance coverage.

Health insurance

Since the provincial Ontario Health Insurance Program does not insure international students during their time of study in Canada, the school has made arrangements with guard.me@school which provides the necessary health insurance coverage. If a student chooses not to join this school plan, evidence of equivalent medical coverage must be provided.

University-bound students

Students who wish to obtain the Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) prior to applying to university are required to take at least six grade 12 level courses. Grade 12 English is mandatory and requires grade 11 English as a prerequisite. Students may also be required to take supplementary ESL classes depending on their English level.

Course requirements

International students should be aware that in Ontario, there are 18 compulsory credits required for the OSSD. The majority of these compulsory credits are taken in the first two years of high school and consequently there are few optional courses in grades 9 and 10. Furthermore, since both university and college entrance requirements frequently require mathematics, math is compulsory at NTCS prior to the grade 12 level. Other restrictions are as follows:

Students with 16 out of province/country equivalent credits must take at least one senior social studies course and at least two English courses.

Students with 23 out of province/country equivalent credits must take at least one English course.

Applications

If you feel you meet the basic criteria for admission to North Toronto Christian School, you will be required to complete an international student application and send it with a copy of your latest report card and your birth certificate or passport to admin@ntcs.on.ca.

Students visiting Toronto or those enrolled in another Canadian secondary school will have an admissions interview at NTCS. Overseas students will be asked to complete an online English assessment and an interview will be arranged with their local relative or guardian. If the student meets the school's admissions requirements, a letter of acceptance will be issued so the family can apply for a student visa/study permit.

Required information

The following information is required before an application is approved:

  1. A completed application form and a copy of the applicant's birth certificate or passport.
  2. Copies of all final reports for a student's previous two school years. No out of province/country equivalent credits can be granted without this documentation.
  3. For applicants to grade 11 or 12 from an Ontario high school, a photocopy of their grade 10 Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test result.
  4. Recommendation from a current school principal/teacher/guidance counsellor concerning behaviour, attitude, and work ethic.
  5. Detailed information on the parent/guardian relationship in Canada, including the address and phone number (work and home) of a guardian and the address and email address of the parents. NTCS requires that a student be living in the same residence as, and under the direct authority and supervision of, a parent or guardian or other designated adult, regardless of their age.
  6. Results obtained on the NTCS Online English Language Assessment.
  7. A statement of willingness to participate in the summer ESL program at North Toronto Christian School and attend ESL classes during the school year, should this be indicated by the NTCS Online English Language Assessment.

The following information is required after an application has been approved:

  1. Copy of the student's immunization record.
  2. Evidence of health insurance or the student's participation in North Toronto Christian School's group health insurance plan for international students.
  3. Copy of student visa/study permit.
