-      Shows that Andrew’s faith started developing through having faith in God (faith that God will provide for him throughout his ministry)
o      E.g. In “The Step of Yes” – Andrew has one shilling that he needs but friend asks for it; Andrew gives it to him although friend might not even need it – has faith that God will provide even in an impossible situation and God gives him 30 shillings from the prayer group

End:
-      Through faith, starts recruiting people to help him expand his ministry so he could reach more people in these areas that do not have access to the Bible or have never heard of the Gospel
-      Andrew’s character development related to his faith in God and through faith in God we see that despite hardships and struggle, can achieve mental/spiritual freedom

Beginning:
-      Andrew is a trouble maker when he is young (wants adventure)
-      He is hesitant to believe in God when he is young – he skips church, plays pranks on the Whestra family because of their faith, he hated listening to the gospel radio station when his mom played it
-      Skeptical about religion, didn’t take it seriously even though grew up in a Christian home
-      Joins the army after he grows a little older
-      In the army, he sees many horrors of death and chaos – begins to become reckless with his life
o      E.g. he sees an Indonesian woman lying in a pool of her blood with her baby in her hand and started to wish for death
o      He wears a yellow straw hat when he goes into war to tempt fate (he doesn’t care and value about life; doesn’t care about living or dying)
o      Began to drink and become reckless in order to numb himself
o      Becomes captive to his past (demonstrated through the monkey story)

Middle:
-      Begins to read the Bible his mother gave him
-      Began to understand what he couldn’t understand before when started reading the Bible
-      At night, he says a prayer and commits his life to Christ
-      After he converts, he starts to evangelize
o      E.g. when working at the factory, evangelizes to someone who bad mouths him
-      He attends a rally and decides that he is going to commit his life to the Lord by becoming a missionary
-      His passion as a missionary is to evangelize to those who do not have access to the Gospel – specifically to those “behind the iron curtain” or communist countries
-      As a child, he ridiculed people for their faith but now, he is going out of his way – even risking his life – to bring the gospel to people
-      As Andrew continues with his missionary work in communist countries, he no longer is held captive by depression and his past – even though he feels pain and discouragement, he is able to break free from it and feel joy through having faith that God is with him

Context: David had washed himself with soap (soap represents freedom and David washing away his past)
-      It was Sunday but David didn’t earn any money and couldn’t buy bread
-      He’s thinking about waving down a driver to get around but had doubts because he didn’t want to get caught
Significance:
-      Theme of freedom appears
-      David didn’t want to wave down a lorry because he began to prize his freedom more and more
-      Freedom becomes more important to him – before, he didn’t care whether or not he lived, but as time goes by and David experiences his life as a free person, he starts to want to become free longer and longer
-      David, in thinking about Johannes words (to not be greedy), is learning about what happiness is
-      He’s developing and learning about human emotions and what happiness feels like (e.g. before, he didn’t feel happy, but after experiencing things like listening to music, creating relationships with people such as Maria, and learning how to smile)
-      Demonstrates character development – before, didn’t care about freedom, then in this quote, wanted to preserve freedom, but then later, realized that no point of freedom if he didn’t have anybody to share it with (wanted freedom and love)
